Puzzle-CNC Bed

Design & Fabrication  |  2012  |  San Diego, CA

The desire to design a platform bed that could be easily packed flat for transport and conveniently mountable without tools or hardware yielded this first prototype.

Conceptually informed by the sinusoidal shape of egg crates and the need to maximize load-baring supports, the initial sketches and mockups specified an interlocking system of curved plywood planes notched and fitted as a puzzle.

The use of Computer Numerical Control (CNC) router sped construction and allowed maximum precision of joint details, ultimately facilitating both fabrication and assemblage of bed.
