Sited on a delicate and precious bluff, north of Scripps Park, La Jolla cove Lifeguard Station was designed as a mostly underground building.

Maximizing the sectional opportunities found while inserting a much-needed ADA accessible ramp from the park to the lower level platform at Lifeguard’s station, we carefully extended the park ground plane towards the beach and slightly amplified the building area of the mid-level terrace above the beach. The resulting building was then ‘tucked under’ this new viewing platform. This gesture will highlight and reveal the lifeguards’ viewing booth as a ‘leaning’ wood and glass structure perched at the end of a concrete cantilevered platform that gently ‘floats’ above the beach.
