Children’s Suite Remodel

Design and Construction Supervision | 2006 | La Jolla, CA

A young professional couple with two young children purchased this 1918 house in La Jolla. Before moving in they realized the children’s (Roger & Lilia) bedroom needed its own bathroom and improved natural light and ventilation. The existing room was an oddly dimensioned (9’ wide by 21’ long) dark and stuffy space with low ceilings. The challenge was to design and build this project in 3 months before the clients moved into the house.

The resulting solution defined the small room into 3 distinct areas; REST (7’X9’) / PLAY (9’X9’) / BATH (5’X9’). The ceiling height was raised to expose the roof joist while soffits were placed above the Bath & Rest areas and 3 new windows were added. The remodel included interior demolition, reframing & installation of 4 new windows, insulation, new electrical & plumbing fixtures, wall & floor finishes plus all the built-in furniture. It was all completed on time and for a very modest $25,000.
