Glass Shelves

Design and Installation |  2002  |  La Jolla, CA

This project responded to the challenge of displaying books and small artifacts inside a tall and mostly glazed space of a custom-house in La Jolla.

To maintain the transparency of the 18’ fixed-glass windows and maximize the vertical space of the room, the shelving system attached ¼” water jet cut aluminum plates to the existing wall frames of the windows.  These aluminum plates were notched to receive custom 5/8” thick glass shelves and together these flat pieces (solid-verticals and transparent-horizontals) create the elegant and minimal bookshelves.

The resulting effect caused by the aluminum and glass shelves is that of levitation of books and art objects against the landscape and sky beyond the windows.
